Learning how to sharpen your wood carving tools yourself is best.  There are several videos and websites that offer suggestions for sharpening.  Just do not be misled by thinking that there is only one way and all other ways are incorrect.  Here is a link to our many sharpening tools for those who wish to hand sharpen the tools themselves.   Or our Ultimate Power Sharpener & Honer

Why we offer a Sharpening Service:  There are many carvers who just cannot get the hang of it!  Or most common, you may be a beginner carver and don’t want to risk damaging your tools.  We often hear from customers that they are “so fortunate to have found our service and would be lost without it”.  Furthermore, sharpening a carving tool is not the most exciting way to spend your time …you would much rather be carving.  Increase that tedious experience by having several tools in need of sharpening and you may be convinced that our service has definite value.

So how do you know a tool requires sharpening?

Believe it or not many of the so called “ready-to-use” carving tools sold on the internet are definitely NOT ready-to-use.  We know of advertised “professionally sharpened tools” that just don’t cut it! (literally).   If the tool is difficult to push through the wood (either with or against the grain) – it needs sharpening!  If a tool leaves a jagged or chattered edge in the wood – it needs sharpening!  If the tool doesn’t leave a smooth finish – it needs sharpening!  This applies to chisels, gouges, v-tools or knives.

How is the bevel of the tool?

If a carving tool does not have the optimum edge bevel it will not perform well and requires extra effort to use.  Carving tools should be ground (for the most part) at a 20 degree angle.  Quality tools are ground to that measurement when new, but overtime the angle may increase or decrease or even become distorted.
