For years, I have used and seen many different sharpening machines.  Some very expensive ones, some inexpensive ones ... but I have never found a better system than this one for both effectiveness and value.  I recommend this machine with enthusiasm.    Pop

Originally invented as a 1" belt sander, this Canadian made machine has proven to be the ultimate tool and knife sharpener with a few minor changes we have made.
First, we installed a quality 1/4hp electrical motor that is Safety approved.  It requires only a few drops of oil after three years of normal service.  Then we wired it so the motor will run in a clockwise motion.  By running away from the operator (clockwise), you have much more control when sharpening or stropping.
Next, the pulley ratio combined with load of our leather belt reduces the rpm's to an estimated 1300rpm's which reduces the chances of overheating or burning the tools edge.
We include two state-of-art Trizact Grinding Belts (1"x42" - approx 700 and 1200 grit) a Swiss made Zirconia Belt of 120 grit and 'Our' Heavy Duty Leather Stropping Belt (1.25"x42") as described below.

Fantastic for all your palm size tools ~ even those pesky V-tools. The belts run safely in a clockwise direction away from you.

Excellent for your standard size chisels and gouges! Its easy to rest the tool handle on your bench to assure the correct bevel is kept when grinding.

Great for knives! The belts run in front of a backing plate which means you get a true flat surface on your knives and chisels without rounding the edge over.

These new Trizact grinding belts are fantastic for sharpening your carving tools. Structured aluminum oxide abrasives feature an eningeered surface of microscopic three-dimensional structures resembling pyramids.  This precise and consistent surface is ideal for final sharpening applications (use our coarse 80 grit for repairing or removing metal).  This new surface not only cuts quickly but also prevents clogging.  Trizact belts last up to 5 times longer than conventional grinding belts.  1" x 42"

Our are heavy duty leather belts are manufactured by Chipping Away right in our Resource Centre. They have been skived approximately 2 1/2" on each end before being glued together with our extra strength bonding agent and clamped to ensure a perfect joint every time.  They run smooth and evenly.  We recommend running them with the 'smooth side' facing out and applying a stropping compound of your choice.  See our webpage page for specific compounds.  Not a bad idea to apply a FEW DROPS of fine oil (honing oil, 3-in-one, etc or even mineral oil) to keep leather supple and keep the compound intact.
