Why is Chipping Away, noted for their quality carving tools and products, selling tools made in China? In our endeavor to serve all carvers from Beginner to Professional and from the budget minded to those that demand the best, we have chosen to add these Chinese tools to our product line-up.

The main problem in securing a line of hand carving tools was to find one that was suitable quality and we believe we have found just the tools. They are made by a 3rd generation family run enterprise that produces quality, traditional tools for China’s professional carvers.
Hand forged from high carbon tool steel and tempered to hold their edges.

Keep these points in mind when ordering:

The set is all hand-forged from decent quality tool steel.
Hand forging means that will be slight variations in sizes.
The tools are tempered to Rc 58 - 60 and will hold their edge well.
The tools are not as cosmetically attractive a those from Europe or North America.
While they have been ‘pre-sharpened’ they are not polished and will require final honing, stropping and buffing before they are ready for use.
Some of the profiles (like the spoons or dog-leg/bottom tools) will also require some additional sharpening before stropping.

By keeping those points in mind, you should not be disappointed as they are decent tools for the price. If you are a beginner or on a restricted budget and prepared to strop and perfect the edges, they will work very nicely for you. We offer two excellent DVD's on sharpening and stropping various tools in our Video section within website as well as a complete line of sharpening stones, strops and buffing wheels and compounds.

The tools average 9” in overall length and come in a heavy duty cloth tool roll. They are tempered to Rc 58 to 60.

This Starter Set is perfect for medium size projects in either Relief or Sculpting styles. The durable hardwood handles are tough enough for mallet use but also very comfortable for pushing the tools by hand. Most of the 13 tools are in the ‘fishtail’ style which offer good control and maneuverability. The set offers an excellent selection of sweeps for the beginner carver.
