A Word About Our Bird Kits

While these kits are labeled 'Beginner', they are meant for adults and not children. The line-drawn pattern that comes with each kit offers various views but limited instruction. An adult should not have too much difficulty in understanding what has to be done to turn the basswood blank into a carving to be proud of. If you feel you require more information regarding the carving, painting, etc. we offer a suitable reference book that may be purchased in addition to the kit.

Suggestions For Tools You Could Use

Hand Tools: If you are a complete beginner carver without tools, you may want to consider starting with simple hand tools. Even if you 'get hooked' on your new hobby and wish to increase your number and variety of tools, these basic hand tools we list below will never be outdated and can be used in a variety of carving styles and applications.

Carving Knife and Chisel Set:

Basic woodcarving knife or Whittling Knife Kit is a must.
Detail knife KN13 by Flexcut should be considered for adding fine detail is an optional knife.
Carving Glove is pretty much a safety necessity to protect your hand that is holding the basswood blank.
Basic Chisel Sets would also be a good choice. We suggest the RA117 or RA116 as a minimum and perhaps add the Basic Set #2 as additional option.
