Chipping Away is dedicated to the growth and development of woodcarving and wood art.

Chipping Away began operation in 1992 when Pop (Dennis Moor) took an early retirement and decided to keep a few cans of beans in the cupboard by means of selling his carvings. He soon found himself being asked to teach chip carving as well as present seminars at some of the local wood shows.  Rogers Public Television asked him to do a television series of 45 individual shows in which he appeared as Host.  The show was appropriately named 'Chipping Away with Dennis Moor'.  As his popularity grew, Pop began to travel across Canada and the US to exhibit and teach at shows and competitions.  Todd (Dennis' son) could see the fun Pop was having and became involved in the business immediately after graduating and receiving university diplomas in both Science and Education.  Chipping Away blossomed and this Father & Son Team became loved across North America.

Todd is not directly involved in the business any longer.  He lives near Kingston, ON and is a dedicated husband and PaPa to his two children. 

Listening to the needs and suggestions of their students, the Moor's designed their own carving knives and found a manufacturer in western New York State willing to take a chance with the project.  They soon were selling over 10,000 knives a year.   In addition to their knives, Chipping Away manufactures the Ultimate Sharpening Machine, Ultimate Power Honer, Leather Strops and Belts, Ceramic Sharpening Stones, Drawing templates, and their Ultimate Tool Caddies.  Chipping Away is always receptive to new ideas and suggestions and actively pursues new products for the wood art hobbyist. 

Dennis and Todd wrote and designed their own chip carving instruction and pattern books in the early 90's.  These original books were produced on a photocopier and sold at shows and in their classes.  As the demand for more and more patterns increased, as well as the popularity of the books, Chipping Away took the next step to publish their own books complete with professional printing and binding.  We now publish 7 chip carving titles as well as a book of Classic Carving/Wood Burning patterns and Caricature Carving under various artists names.  Dennis's newest book "Chip Carver's Workbook" is published by Fox Chapel and considered to be the best of its kind on the market.  The workbook is now published in both Russia and France.

Chipping Away produces a four volume series of chip carving videos available in DVD format.   We also produce a DVD video on Bark Carving by Tony Wispinski.  Chipping Away is the producer of "Carving Magical Tree Houses" starring Rick Jensen.

In May of 2002, CA moved their operation to a new 5,000 sq ft facility and offers a showroom of their entire product line, warehouse and shipping facilities for their huge mail order business as well as space for carving classes.  Chipping Away ships products to 20 countries.

Chipping Away has had an active website on the Internet since the mid 90's and our mail order business grew substantially when a secure server was added for credit card sales.   When CA expanded to include all areas of woodcarving and woodburning we invested in a complete E-commerce system including a Internet Shopping Cart System.  Realizing that not everyone uses the Internet, CA produces a full colour catalog each year.
